After bariatric surgery, weight gain may occur again, especially after the first year, due to technical incompatibilities, patient incompatibility and metabolism disorders.
Patients who regain weight should be evaluated in detail and the source of the problem should be correctly identified. Studies have shown that weight gain occurs around 10-15%, especially after sleeve gastrectomy. In such patients, weight gain problems that cannot be solved with diet, sports and psychological support if necessary, are solved with various revision surgeries.
Patients who have lost 5-6 kilos to the weight they want to reach after 18 months after bariatric surgery and those who want to lose 8-10 kilos after 3-4 years after the surgery frequently apply to us. These patients are generally looking for a non-surgical method of weight loss. There are many patients who want to make detailed research and placement a gastric balloon. However, my response to them is unfortunately no.
Because, after sleeve gastrectomy, having a gastric balloon is not suitable for the health of the patient. Inserting a gastric balloon is absolutely contraindicated in patients with surgically reduced gastric capacity and may cause tears or even perforation in the gastric mucosa. The most appropriate approach is surgical revision methods. Among these methods, the addition of resleeve (re-gastric reduction) and absorption-reducing surgeries such as by-pass or bipartition are included.
It would be more appropriate for patients to include physical activity in their lives and consume foods low in calories to maintain weight loss, instead of researching methods such as gastric balloon in order not to gain weight after bariatric surgery.
