Do I Have to Exercise After Sleeve Gastrectomy?

In this article, I will answer the question “Do I Have to Exercise After Sleeve Gastrectomy?”.

Sport should be an indispensable element of human life. Sports should not be done just to lose weight. Exercising plays a role in increasing the amount of oxygen used by the body and increasing both physical and mental capacity, as well as keeping the body fit. Therefore, it would be better to turn it into a way of life rather than seeing it as an obligation. Success is also very important, especially for individuals who are in the slimming process to be the focal point of their lives.

Why Is It Important To Do Sports?

Because the skin is the body’s largest organ and has the capacity to stretch. As it stretches and expands, its structure may deteriorate and either excessive skin removal surgeries are required to regain its old shape, or this possibility is minimized with sports.

Patients who want to lose weight due to obesity disorders resort to surgical or non-surgical weight loss methods. Subcutaneous adipose tissue is quite high in patients who have stomach reduction procedures, especially those who prefer surgical methods, and due to rapid weight loss after surgery, excess adipose tissue that acts as a support between the skin and muscle tissue is lost and skin sagging may occur. This situation causes undesirable aesthetic concerns in patients.

During the weight loss phase, starting with light physical activities after the surgical recovery period and then engaging in active sports activities will both contribute to the development of subcutaneous muscle tissue and will be beneficial in maintaining the tension of the skin. In particular, it will lead to the regression of cardiovascular and joint problems caused by excess weight.

How Long Can I Exercise After The Surgery?

From the first day after the operation to the 10th day, we recommend small walks at home to our patients. From the 10th day to the end of the 1st month, we want them to spend their walks. From the 1st month, they can do brisk walking and after the 2nd month they can jog and swim. In this process, we see that pilates provides the flexibility of patients lost and prevents them from complaining because it is not overly tired.

As always, it is important to increase your physical activities under the control of a professional sports instructor, in line with the recommendations of your physician, for permanent weight loss. Remember, this should not be an obligation for you, but a lifestyle.
