How Will I Eat After Weight Loss Surgery?

I believe that this article, in which I talked about general nutritional principles and important points to be followed in the period after weight loss surgery will guide you and give you an idea about the tips of nutrition. In order to support tissue healing during rapid weight loss and to minimize muscle loss in the diet plan after weight loss surgery, sufficient energy, protein and other nutrients are required first. What is important is that the food and beverages consumed after the operation maximize weight loss while minimizing reflux, early satiety and dumping syndrome.

It is of great importance to stick to the nutrition plan, to prevent complications that may occur after surgery and to help heal wounds in the digestive system. The gradual diet program to be applied is the most appropriate diet for the postoperative nutrition program.

The gradual nutrition to be applied consists of 5 periods; Clear Liquid Period, Dark Liquid Period, Puree Period, Soft Solid Period and Transition Period to Solid Food.

Clear Fluid Period

It is the first step in postoperative nutrition and is the first week diet. During this period, the aim is not to meet all the needs of the body with natural foods, but to get the digestive system accustomed to foods. That’s why this period is only; Water, unsweetened and grainless compote, grainless chicken or broth, open herbal teas (except black, green and form tea) and the water accumulated on yogurt are consumed. However, it is absolutely necessary for the patient to use Baiatric Protein Supplements.

Dark Fluid Period

It is the diet of the second week after surgery. In this period, unlike the first week, vegetable soups can be consumed in broth, liquids with a thicker consistency, which is passed through a blender. In this period; Water, cereal-free soups blended into broth, decaffeinated coffee, light tea, diluted freshly squeezed fruit juices (maximum 120 ml), soy milk, almond milk, lactose-free milk, diluted yoghurt, kefir, ayran and sugar-free pudding made of skimmed milk can be consumed. Protein supplements started in the first week should continue.

Puree Period

It is a period from the first week that puree that is not very solid, almost in the consistency of pudding, will be consumed. In this period; Puree forms of eggs, meaty vegetables or legumes, unsweetened fruit puree, fruit yoghurt, crushed cottage cheese, unsalted curd cheese, labneh cheese and steamed fish can be eaten. As of this week, the 30-minute rule in solid-liquid separation has now begun. After consuming solid foods, you should wait at least 30 minutes to consume liquid food. This rule will continue for life.

Soft Solid Period

This week is the period of preparing the body for solid food. It covers the processes of chopping, grinding, crushing and pureeing. In this period; Lean meats can be boiled or cooked lean in oven bags, boiled eggs, vegetable dishes with minced meat, boiled or soft fruits that can be mashed with a fork.

Transition Period to Solid Food

In this period, the target is 60-80 grams of protein per day. In this period; You can consume moist soft meats, raw vegetables such as lettuce / carrots, whole grains, and caffeinated coffee.

Each person’s diet and metabolism is different. Never compare yourself to other people’s diets. Get in contact with your doctor and dietician and decide together on the most suitable nutrition program and scheme for you.
